HOULTON – Malcolm Edward York, 93, passed away Oct. 23, 2007, at a local health care facility. He was born Feb. 22, 1914, in Houlton, the son of James Edward and Angie (Guiou) York. Malcolm graduated from Houlton High School after which he worked as a telegrapher at Houlton Telegraph Co., and later for Edward’s Market in the mid ’30s. In 1942, he went to work for the U.S. Army Air Force repairing electronic equipment and was sent by the military to school to study what was then secret radar systems in Rome, N.Y. He continued to work on military bombers and fighter planes until the end of World War II. In 1945, he started and operated York’s Radio Sales and Service until it was sold in the mid ’60s. In the early ’50, he joined in a partnership with Owen Hannigan and formed Houlton Cable TV System, which was the result of Malcolm’s electronics expertise and experiments that produced the first ever reception of TV signals and pictures in Houlton in 1948. In the mid ’60s, he started York’s Bookstore which is now operated by his son, Lynn York. Malcolm was a lifelong member of Court Street Baptist Church, where he served in several positions of leadership. He was a member and president in the Houlton Rotary Club. He was very proud of being a Mason and to having been the master of Houlton Monument Lodge. He was a HAM radio operator (W1OCU). He was a skilled fly fisherman and avid hunter. Malcolm is survived by his sons, Dean York and Lynn York, both of Houlton; three granddaughters he loved, Susan J. York of Houlton, Jody E. White and her husband, Kenneth, of Brewer, and Diane A. York of Standish; two great-grandchildren he adored, Gehrig and Casey White of Brewer; a brother and sister, Gerard York and Barbara Chapman, both of Houlton; four lifelong friends, Hubert Golding, Lewis Webber, Rodney Palmer and Bernard Maher, all of Houlton; several nieces and nephews. Malcolm was predeceased by his beloved wife of 72 years, Muriel Grace (Golding) York, in 2005; his parents; three sisters, Virginia Robbins, Ruth Berry and Gwen Gervais; two half sisters, Alelade Zarilla and Betty Spears; and a half brother, James York Jr. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev.
