HAMPDEN and PORTLAND Marcie Spencer died unexpectedly June 13, 2008, at a Portland hospital after surgery. Her intense love of life and family never wavered. She was born July 10, 1925, in Cedaredge, Colo., the daughter of W.C. and Noreen (Bennett) Overhaults. She was an accomplished equestrian by her late teens and loved riding on the open range. She appeared and rode in the 1949 film “Red Stallion in the Rockies,” as the double for lead actress Jean Heather. At 18 she became a member of Daughters of the American Revolution and Order of the Eastern Star. She enrolled in Colorado Women’s College, as a chemistry major, but changed her plans after a chance meeting with her future husband, Howard E. “Skip” Spencer, in 1943, who was in Colorado training with the 10th Mountain Division. They married, but delayed starting a family for several years due to wartime’s and college. She made up for lost time, giving birth to seven sons and one precious daughter. She was married for 30 years, and raised the last of her children while returning to school at Beal Business College, Bangor. With her children grown, she moved to Portland and enjoyed several years as a family aide, before retiring to Park Danforth. Her greatest joy in life remained holidays and family gatherings at their lakeside cabin, surrounded by her children and their families. She was predeceased by her parents; and her two brothers, Dr. Wendell C. Overhaults and Winston C. Overhaults. She is survived by her children, Howard, Stephen and wife, Libbey, Stanley, Randall and wife, Jan, Roger and wife, Torey, Cheryl and husband, James Shcissel, Mark and wife, Linda and Timothy and wife, Tracy; and 16 loving grandchildren. Services will be held 3 p.m. Wednesday, June 18, at St. Matthews Catholic Church, Western Avenue, Hampden.
