EDDINGTON – Margaret Lillian (Hatch) Godley passed away Feb. 26, 2007, surrounded by her children and family after a courageous battle with a chronic illness. She was born March 27, 1921, in Brewer, the daughter of Harold W. and Margaret (McAuliffe) Hatch. Margaret was a longtime resident of South Brewer and attended Brewer High School. She was crowned “Miss Brewer” in 1940. In her work at A.J. Tucker Shoe Factory, South Brewer, she met her husband to be, Peter. Margaret was an avid gardener and tireless worker. She enjoyed her flower and vegetable gardens right through her 85th year. She relished her yearly ritual of cooking and canning. Her quilting handiwork was admired by everyone. She was legendary for her direct manner and sharp wit, which could be both engaging and disarming. Throughout the years she became the matriarchal figure for the remaining Hatch family, as well as, for many others with whom she created a special bond. She is survived by her children, James H. Tolman and his wife, Donna, of Holden, Rebecca Sue Godley and her husband, Dr. Jerome Missel, of Woonsocket, R.I., and Otis A. “Joe” Godley of Eddington; grandchildren, Darcy Tolman Diliddo of North Attleboro, Mass., Brandon Tolman of Bangor, Riley Louise Godley of Brewer and Matthew Horowitz of Ithaca, N.Y.; two great-grandchildren, Sydney and Jack Diliddo; two younger brothers, Charles E. Hatch of Hermon and Gregory Hatch of South Brewer. She is also survived by several cousins, nieces and nephews, with special mention of her nephew, Jeff Ashey, who resided with the Godley family for a period of time. She was predeceased by her husband, Peter Godley; one sister, Helena V. Mathews; and brothers, George W. Hatch and Joseph “Mike” Hatch. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer, where services will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 3, with the Rev. Barbara J. Clarke, rector of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church, Brewer, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately after the service at the Brookings-Smith Family Rooms, 55 South Main St., Brewer.
