AUGUSTA – Margaret Lydia Hitchings, 79, of Augusta, passed away peacefully, with courage and dignity, Wednesday Nov. 30, 2005, at Glenridge Nursing Home. Margaret was born July 3, 1926, in Orono, the devoted daughter of Samuel L. and Katherine (Merrill) Hitchings. Margaret lived in Skowhegan for most of her life, where she graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1946 and also attended the Skowhegan Business School. She was very active in local groups, including the Federated Church in Skowhegan, Historical Society in Skowhegan, Waterville-Oakland Button Club, Sandy River Mineral Club, Western Maine Audubon Society and Farmington American Auxiliary (Past President). Margaret attended South Parish Congregational Church after moving to Augusta. She is survived by her brother, Harland Hitchings of Princeton. Other survivors include a very special friend, her brother Charles’ late wife, Phoebe Hitchings, of Skowhegan; plus nieces, nephews and cousins. Margaret was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Charles. A celebration of her life will be held 1 p.m. Dec. 3, at South Parish Congregational Church, in Augusta, with the Rev. Bruce Forbes officiating. Interment will occur at Pine Grove Cemetery in Waterville. Margaret’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Glenridge Nursing Home for the kindness and wonderful care they gave her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Margaret’s honor to the South Parish Stained Glass Window Restoration Fund, South Parish Congregational Church, 9 Church St., Augusta, ME 04330. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave, Skowhegan.
