PRESQUE ISLE – Marian Ethel Hilton Farley passed away Tuesday, Feb. 14, 2006, at a Meriden, Conn. nursing facility. She was born April 2, 1916, to Hadley Francis Hilton and Clara Amber Gillespie Hilton at home in Castle Hill, the eldest of four daughters. A child of the depression, she appreciated every little thing and took nothing for granted. Marian graduated from Mapleton High School in 1934 as salutatorian and Aroostook State Teachers’ College in 1961. She enjoyed a career of several years in the field of education. She taught all eight grades in country schools in Mapleton and Castle Hill, followed by employment in the Presque Isle school system, grade 2 at Cunningham Elementary School, grades 2 and 1 at the newly opened Zippel School and one year at Gouldville School. She retired in 1976 to care for her ailing son, Robert Edwin Farley. In retirement, Marian became adept at making quilts, knitting and crocheting and painting. She attended SAGE classes at UMPI, particularly enjoying the Latin class and availed herself of many years of Presque Isle adult education opportunities. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and exploring family history. She also enjoyed her garden and canned her own fruits and vegetables. She rarely sat down! Marian was a member of the Maine Retired Teachers’ Association, the Haystack Historical Society, the Eastern Star and Presque Isle Senior Citizens. She attended State Street Baptist Church, where she taught Sunday school for many years. She is sadly missed by her daughters, Carol Farley Hartt and fiance, Bob Bicht, of Meriden, Conn. and Sandra Farley Temple and husband, Lonnie Dan Temple, of Alpharetta, Ga.; her beloved younger sister, Eunice Hilton Lovley, formerly of Castle Hill and Mapleton, now residing in Presque Isle; grandchildren, Stephen Hartt and wife, Bonnie, of East Hampton, Conn., Joel Hartt and Renee Loukides of Merrimack, N.H., Danielle Temple of Newton, Ga. and USA Lt. Robert Temple of Sacketts Harbor, N.Y.; twin great-grandchildren, Masie Leigh and Robert Stephen Hartt of East Hampton, Conn.; and many beloved nieces and nephews. Marian was predeceased by her parents, her husband, Edwin Leigh Farley; her son, Robert Edwin Farley; and her sisters, Mary Hilton York and Gladys Hilton York. She is hugely missed by her feline companions, Picabo, Willie, Sammy and Tiger. The family is grateful for the many cards, calls and visits during her brief illness. Calling hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, at Duncan Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle. The funeral will be held 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 20, at Duncan Graves Funeral Home, Presque Isle, with the Rev. Kenneth Fox, officiating. Friends and family are invited to contribute to causes close to Marian’s heart, including the Central Aroostook Humane Society, the Aroostook Animal Welfare Awareness Group and the Haystack and Presque Isle Historical Societies.
