MACHIAS – Marie Plummer Foss, 87, died peacefully May 30, 2008, at home after a period of failing health, which she endured with grace. She was born April 29, 1921, in Machias, the beloved daughter of Walter D. and Louise (Morang) Plummer. Marie graduated from Machias High School, Washington State Normal School, WSNS, and the University of Maine. After graduating from WSNS, Marie taught in the Machias school system. During World War II, Marie was a chief clerk for the Washington County Office of Price Administration. In 1947 she married Millard “Bud” Foss, with whom she shared 52 years of togetherness. Bud and Marie moved to Bangor, where they began their careers in education. Marie taught sixth grade in the Bangor school system for more than 20 years. She always said sixth grade was the best grade. In retirement, Bud and Marie enjoyed their passion for fishing and loved spending time at their cottage on Six-Mile Lake. Marie was proud of her membership in the Mayflower Society, hav-ing traced lineage to Dr. Samuel Fuller. During her years in Bangor, Marie was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church and in recent years a communicant of Holy Name of Jesus Church, Machias. She was predeceased by her parents; her beloved husband, Bud; and her sister, Helen. Marie is survived by her loving daughter, Penelope; her godson, Lewis Arey Jr.; sister-in-law, Anna Wareing; special cousin, Sandra Pottle; niece, nephews and cousins. At Marie’s request, there are no visiting hours. A Mass of Christian burial will be held 10 a.m. Friday, June 6, at Holy Name Church, Machias. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Name Church, P.O. Box 248, Machias, ME 04654 or a charity of one’s choice. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
