FRANKFORT and WINTERPORT – Mary Irene Birmingham, 78, died Sept. 18, 2004, at a Belfast hospital. She was born May 26, 1926, in Boston, the daughter of Elmer H. and Mary Gertrude (McMann) Clements. Irene attended Winterport schools, graduated from Kents Hill School, attended Leslie College and graduated from the University of Maine. She was a primary school teacher and a well-known antiques dealer. Irene was a life-long communicant of St. Gabrielle’s Catholic Church, past regent of the Daughters of Isabella, past president of the Bangor District of the Maine Diocesan Council of Catholic Women, past president of the Winterport Women’s Club, a sponsor of Winterports first Girl Scout troop. Irene was a former director of S.A.D. No. 22, held many offices in the Winterport Town Republican Committee, and was a member of the Winterport Health Council. She served the town of Frankfort as selectman, assessor, member of the recreation department, the planning board and budget committee. She was a Girl Scout Cadet Leader and member of the Republican Town Committee. Irene was always politically active and was chairman of the Waldo County Republican Committee and was a longtime member of the State Republican Committee. She was involved in town, county, state and national campaigns and chair of many varied committees. She is listed in Who’s Who in American Politics. Irene is survived by one cousin, Marjorie Larabee; several second cousins, nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband, C. Robert Crockett and her second husband, John Birmingham. A memorial mass will be celebrated 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 24, 2004, at St. Gabrielle’s Catholic Church, Main Street, Winterport, with Fr. Bob Vallancourt, pastor, presider. Burial will follow at Oak Hill Cemetery. Arrangements by Foley Funeral Service, Bangor.
