EASTPORT – Mary Jane Gardella, 82, passed away Jan. 11, 2004, at a Bangor hospital. She was born Feb. 21, 1921, in Stoneham, Mass., the beloved daughter of Lewis H. and Lola C. Doyle. Mary Jane was a longtime resident of Merrimack and Haverhill, Mass., where she graduated from Haverhill High School in 1940. A beautiful and talented artist, Mary Jane became a shoe designer and worked for many years in the shoe industry. Later she met and married naval officer William A. Gardella, predeceased of Haverhill and began her greatest and most devoted lifelong endeavor of motherhood to her surviving daughter, Maria L. Gardella of Florence, Italy and son, William L. Gardella of Eastport. Mary Jane moved to Eastport, the birthplace of her mother, Lola Capen Doyle in 1976 and worked tirelessly to provide a happy and loving home. She painted many beautiful oil paintings for her family and friends. An inspired poet she was a frequent contributor to the Quoddy Tides Newspaper with poems that revealed the beauty and kindness of her heart. A memorial service will be held in the springtime.
