BAR HARBOR – Maynard L. Vance Sr., 83, died at Sonogee Rehab and Living Center, Bar Har-bor. He was born Dec. 25, 1921, in Lubec, the son of Edward and Winnie (Seely) Vance. Maynard joined the YCC as a teenager. He enlisted in the U.S. Army at age 17, where he stayed until 1945. While in the army he traveled extensively, told many tales and made many friends of which he still corresponded with. Maynard was brought up by his sister, Ruth Whalen. He came back to Bar Harbor in 1975 and worked for the town highway department. He retired at age 62 and worked for the Bar Harbor Wastewater Treatment Plant. He made many, many friends over his lifetime. He was known for his kindness, cooking and Downeast humor. His biggest joy was cooking for people; you never left his place with empty pockets – a cookie, candy, sardines, tomatoes or whatever, he was affectionately known as the “candy man.” He enjoyed gardening, clamming, yard sales and chatting with his friends. When he moved back to Bar Harbor he met his soul mate which he married 20 years later. After many trips to the hospital he befriended the ambulance crew and hospital staff. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean (Keene) Vance; a granddaughter, Sonja Hubbard and husband, Leon, of Bar Harbor; a grandson, Maynard Vance III of Waltham; and his dog, Sammi “little girl.” He will be sadly missed by everyone. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m., Friday, Dec. 16, at the Church of Our Father, Hulls Cove with Fr. Chuck Bradshaw officiating. Those who wish may make contributions in Maynard’s memory to the Bar Harbor Fireman’s Relief Fund, 37 Firefly Lane, Bar Harbor, ME 04609 or Southwest Harbor SPCA, P.O.
