MILLINOCKET – Melvin F. “Dick” Ferland, 83, longtime resident and owner of Ferland Jewelers, Millinocket, died Friday, Dec. 2, 2005, at his residence. He was born Sept. 2, 1922, in Millinocket, the son of George A. and Mary (Rashon) Ferland. Dick founded his business in 1948 and remained active in his business until just a couple of years ago. He was one of the original gemologists in the state of Maine and his knowledge of gemology was reflected in his work and service to his customers. Dick loved to hunt and fish and was a member of Hillcrest Golf Club in Millinocket. He also enjoyed playing pool with his grandson, Brent. Dick was a World War II U.S. Army veteran, a member of Donald V. Henry Post No. 4154 American Legion and the Bernard L. Coro, Chapter No. 22 D.A.V. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Gloria (MacKenzie) Ferland; one son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Elaine Ferland; two grandchildren, Brent and Ashley, all of Millinocket; two sisters, Carlene Buchanan of Falls Church, Va. and Maxine Neal of Millinocket; a special sister-in-law, Betty Ferland of Millinocket, and several special nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his best friend and brother, George Ferland; and a brother, Wayne. Friends may call 10-11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5, where services will be held 11 a.m. at R. L.
