FREEDOM – Norman E. Drew, 85, passed away Wednesday, March 31, 2004, at the Togus nursing facility, where he received outstanding care by the staff. He was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Dyer Brook, the son of Basil and Annie (Teed) Drew. He attended schools in Unity. On March 11, 1941, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Aug. 24, 1945, with the rank of Sergeant. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Belfast, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 50 in Unity. On Nov. 15, 1947, he married the former Ruth A. Knowlton, and together had shared 56 wonderful years. He enjoyed being with his family. He loved taking care of his grandchildren, hunting, fishing, and was a Red Sox fan. One of his favorite pastimes was doing surveillance from his living room window or the front porch for the Freedom General Store, or for Paul Flynn. He was employed by McCorrison and Cole Auto in Thorndike for several years, was a partner of an auto dealership in Belfast for several years, and was a custodian at SAD 3 in Thorndike for before retiring in the early 80’s. He was predeceased by a son, Theodore Drew; a daughter, Robin Drew; and brothers, Cecil Drew, Carl Drew, Frank Drew and Roger Drew. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Ruth A. Drew of Freedom; his daughter, Debbie Ingraham and her special friend, Larry Jackson, of Knox; his grandchildren, Shannon Keithan and her husband, Kal, of Montville, Daimen Ingraham and her friend, Brook Pinkham, of Freedom, and Kayla Ingraham of Knox; his two great-granddaughters, Jazlyn Jayden Drew Ingraham of Montville, and Kamara Renee Keithan of Montville; a brother, Laurel Drew of Thorndike; two sisters, Marion Curtis of Belfast, and Ruth Higgins and her husband, Arnold, of Belfast; a stepsister, Iva Giro of Westbrook; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. A graveside service will be held at a later date at Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Freedom. Arrangements are by Lawry Brothers Funeral Home, Fairfield.
