AUGUSTA – Patricia E. Ellis, 58, of 7 New England Road, passed away peacefully on Nov. 9, 2003, at Maine General Medical Center, Augusta, with family and friends by her side following a long courageous fight with cancer. She was born April 21, 1945, in Skowhegan, the daughter of Walter and Doris (Roderick) Day. She attended schools in Monticello, was a graduate of Mount Merci High School in Waterville, and attended Farmington State Teachers College. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and loved by all who knew her. In the early 60’s she lived and worked in Skowhegan, where she met and married her husband of 39 years, Harold E. Ellis. They were wed on Sept. 4, 1964. In the early 70’s Mrs. Ellis and her husband moved to Augusta, where she operated her own snack bar business, through a program for the visually impaired for 21 years. Her most recent employment was as an Intake Specialist for the Department of Labor Division for the blind. She was also very active in the advocacy for people with debilitating eye diseases. She was a member of the Pine Tree Guide Dog Users Group. Surviving are her husband, Harold E. Ellis of Augusta and beloved guide dog Ilya; her parents, Walter and Doris Day of Monticello; a son, Thomas P. Ellis and wife, Shawna, of Farmingdale; two daughters, Rebecca J. Ellis of Augusta, and Sherry A. Belka and husband, Tyler, of Augusta; five grandchildren, Amanda Ellis, Jessica Tingler, Joshua and Justin Belka, all of Augusta, and Adriana Ellis of Farmingdale; three brothers, Daniel Day of Florida, Gary Day of Maryland, and Phillip Day and wife, Gloria, of Norridgewock; one special uncle, George Roderick of Augusta; several sisters and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear and lifelong friends. Pat touched the hearts of many people with her caring, humor, and outgoing personality and love of others. She will be sadly missed and fondly remembered. Visiting hours will be held from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12, at Smart & Edwards Funeral Home, 183 Madison Ave., Skowhegan. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Notre Dame de Lourdes Church, Water Street, Skowhegan. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, North St., Skowhegan. A celebration of her life will follow immediately after the burial at the parish hall.
