DADE CITY, FLA. – Paul Edward Knowles, beloved father, died peacefully in his sleep on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 27, 2003, at his home in Dade City, Fla. He was 88 years young. Paul was born to Frank and Isabel (Ryder) Knowles in Bangor, Sept. 8, 1915, and was educated in the Bangor school system. He became a pharmacist – the youngest person ever to get his license in Maine. He worked at the Garland Street Pharmacy, the Apothecary on State Street, bought and owned Hilltop Pharmacy on Hammond Street, and was Chief of Pharmacy for the Eastern Maine Medical Center for many years until his retirement. Mr. Knowles was possessed of an extraordinary dry wit, was a cribbage master, a champion crossword puzzle solver, a lifelong avid reader, wordsmith and polymath, who passed these traits on to all of his children. Mr. Knowles is survived by his loving sons, Casey of Coolin, Idaho, and Kevin of Norwood, Mass.; devoted daughters, Karen Knowles-Pearce of San Francisco, Calif., and Kim of Norwood, Mass.; sons-in-law, Norman Pearce of San Francisco, Calif., and Jack Pezzone of Norwood, Mass., grandson, Paul A. Knowles of San Francisco; granddaughter, Katie Knowles of Sandpoint, Idaho; numerous nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. Mr. Knowles spent the few last years living at a golf resort where he played daily, nearly until his death. By doing that, he achieved one of his life’s greatest goals, which was to, at long last, “shoot under his age”! He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
