MACHIAS – Pennell “Spec/ Penn” L. Worcester Sr., 96, died May 24, 2007. He was born Oct. 22, 1910, in Machias. He was the youngest son of the late Sam L. and Julia (Inglee) Worcester. Penn graduated from Machias Memorial High School in 1928. He attended Washington State Normal School for one year. Penn worked one year in the Portland vicinity and one year in Presque Isle. Returning to Machias, he was employed by Bangor Hydro Electric Co., and in 1931, entered the U.S. Postal Service, Machias, as a clerk-carrier. He retired in 1971 as a postal supervisor. Penn was a past president of the Maine Branch United Federation of Post Office clerks and attended a national convention of that branch in Portland, Ore. He was a charter member and a past president of the Machias Valley Sportsman’s Club and was honored with a life membership. The woods and waters of Maine will miss him, being a former Maine guide and an avid sportsman. Penn had a great interest in the Boy Scout program and was a member for more than 35 years. He attended the National Jamboree B.S.A. at Valley Forge, Pa., in 1950, as assistant Scoutmaster and was explore advisor for a group of New England Scouts for a month-long trip to the Philmont Scout Ranch, Cimarron, N.M., in 1959. Penn was also an accomplished photographer who documented Machias area history and events for more than 60 years. He was predeceased by his wife of 57 years, Marian; and two brothers, Robert of Portland and Karl of Springfield. Penn is survived by one son, Pennell L. Worcester Jr. and wife, Faye, of Naples; four grandchildren, Susan Nicholson and husband, Shawn, of Gorham, Samuel, Aime and Dylan, all of Naples; one great-grandson, Gavin; one nephew, Robert Butler and wife, Gertrude, of York; and many good friends and neighbors in Machias. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 30, at Bragdon-Kelley-Camp-bell Funeral Home, Machias. Interment will be immediately after at Longfellow Cemetery.
