FORT FAIRFIELD – Philip L. Haines, 81, husband of the late Marjorie A. Haines, died Dec. 15, 2003, at a Caribou nursing facility after a brief illness. He was born Dec. 22, 1921, at Fort Fairfield, the son of Leigh C. and Leversa (Hopkinson) Haines. He was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield High School, Class of 1940, and attended the University of Maine, Orono. Philip was married to Marjorie A. Hayden on May 30, 1943, and served in the U.S. Army during World War II in both the European and Pacific Theater in the 387 Infantry, 97th Infantry Division and received the Combat Infantry Award. He was a member of the Trinity Masonic Lodge, AF & AM No. 130, Presque Isle, the American Legion, Walter Lovely Post No. 27, Fort Fairfield, the Anna Temple Shrine, Bangor, the Aroostook Shrine Club, Presque Isle, and the York Rite. Philip had been employed in the farming industry for many years and worked as a potato buyer for Interstate Foods of Fort Fairfield prior to his retirement in 1991. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife on June 8, 2000; one brother, Donald Haines; one sister, Shirley Hedin. He is survived by two sons, Peter L. and John H. Haines, both of Birdsoro, Pa.; two daughters, Joan Haines and companion, James E. Chesky, of Selkirk, N.Y., Barbara J. Monti of Fort Fairfield; one sister, Marnie Haines of Fort Fairfield; one sister-in-law, Laura Hayden Byers and her husband, Verne, of Farmington; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. In accordance with Philip’s wishes, there will be no services at this time. A graveside Masonic service will be conducted in the spring at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. Those who choose may contribute in memory of Mr. Haines to a charity or organization of one’s choice. Arrangements in care of the Dorsey Funeral Home, Fort Fairfield.
