RACHEL (SARGENT) MAGOON ELLSWORTH – Rachel (Sargent) Magoon, 64, wife of Carl Magoon, died on May 20, 2004, at her home after a period of illness. She was born Jan. 22, 1940, at home in Ellsworth Falls, the youngest child of Raymond F. and Viola (Eichmann) Sargent. She attended Ellsworth schools and graduated as Valedictorian of her class from Ellsworth High School. In addition to having accumulated well over 700 hours of specialized training in courses designed to enhance her expertise as a Chemical Dependency/Codependency and Grief Counselor, in 1996 she completed a 14 month program to receive her certificate from the Pecos, N.M., Benedictine Monastery School for Spiritual Directors at Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey in Pecos, N.M. Rachel worked at several different jobs during her younger years before finding her vocation as a wounded healer. In the 12 years prior to establishing her private practice called “The Nurturing Place” in Ellsworth in 1990, she worked as a counselor at The Counseling Center and at the Alcohol Institute of EMMC, as Director of Substance Abuse Services at St. Joseph Hospital in Bangor, and as Coordinator of Special Retreats at St. Paul Center in Augusta. She served on a variety of boards during her lifetime, including Hancock County Mental Health Association, Homestead, Open Door Recovery Center (of which she was co-founder), and Your Place, Inc. She was one of the founders and for more than 20 years was coordinator of the Annual 11th Step Teen Retreat for youngsters affected by the disease of alcoholism. A recovering alcoholic, she was proud of her longtime membership in Alcoholics Anonymous. She was a communicant at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ellsworth, where she served in various capacities through the years, including lector, eucharistic minister, adult spiritual formation coordinator, and pastoral council member. Rachel loved reading, writing, swimming, fishing, her family, her friends, her dog, Smudge, and playing video games with her beloved grandson, Josh. Her three most treasured gifts were her faith in Jesus Christ, her sense of humor, and the selfless devotion shown to her by her husband, Carl. She is survived by her husband of 45 years, Carl, of Ellsworth; her daughter, Carla, of Laconia, N.H.; her son, Jon of Ellsworth; her grandson, Joshua Estes of Laconia, N.H.; her mother, Viola Sargent of Ellsworth; her two sisters, Lillian “Lily” Katsiaficas of Ellsworth, and Ellen Kroot of Richmond; and her brothers-in-law, Charles Katsiaficas and John Kroot; her two brothers, Roger Sargent of Trenton and Edward “Bill” Sargent of Ellsworth; and her sisters-in-law, Jeannine Sargent and Rosemary Sargent; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. There will be no visiting hours as such. But those who care to are invited to stop by St. Joseph Church on Monday evening anytime between 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. to spend a moment in prayer with her husband, family, and friends. The rosary will be prayed at 7:30 p.m. that evening at the church. A funeral mass will be celebrated 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday at St. Joseph Church in Ellsworth, followed by a gathering and potluck dinner in the Father Kenney Center.
