SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Ralph Merrill Grindle, 89, passed away peacefully June 20, 2005, at an Ellsworth healthcare facility surrounded by loved ones. He was born Oct. 22, 1915, the son of Charles and Sylvia Grindle. He was a boat builder and co-owner of Rich and Grindle Boat Company in Southwest Harbor. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was stationed in the Hawaiian Islands. He was proprietor of Grindle’s Store in Southwest Harbor for more than 45 years. He was a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the Tremont Masonic Lodge. He is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Ruth (Thurston) Grindle; two sons, Ralph Morgan Grindle and his wife, Janette, of Hancock, John Paul Grindle of Southwest Harbor; and two daughters, RuthAnn Fenton and her husband, Nathaniel, of Bar Harbor; and Linda Ann Dow and her husband, George, of Southwest Harbor; 10 grandchildren, Susan Klopfstein and her husband, Richard, of California, Sharon Oliver and her husband, Maury, of Lamoine, Julie Fortner and her husband, Michael, of Illinois, Diane Sutherland of Casco, Donna Grover and her husband, Robert, of Windham, Robert Ellis and his wife, Ivey, of Ellsworth, Janet Ellis of Mount Desert, Sandy Rich and his wife, Kelli, of Bass Harbor, Jeffrey Rich of Bass Harbor, and Paul Grindle of Southwest Harbor; 18 great-grandchildren; and a very special friend, Mary Grindle. He was predeceased by a daughter, Mary Elizabeth Densmore of Windham; and two grandchildren, Michael Robert Logan Grindle and David Lawrence Berry. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 24, 2005, at Mount Height Cemetery, Southwest Harbor, with full military honors. The Rev. Wayne Buchanan will be officiating.
