BAR HARBOR – Raymond “Ray” Douglas Sprague Jr., 73, died Jan. 25, 2006, at a Bar Harbor healthcare facility. He was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Bar Harbor, the son of Raymond Douglas and Gwendolyn (Kelly) Sprague Sr. Raymond worked at Jackson Lab for 18 years and worked as a physical therapist aid at Mount Desert Island Hospital for many years. He also was employed for the Bar Harbor Police Department and the Canadian National Ferry Service. He was a member of the American Legion, Post No. 207 of Trenton, where he was chairman of Bingo for many years and the First Baptist Church of Bar Harbor. Raymond was a great outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting, fishing and all sports. He spent a great deal of his time passing on these outdoor traditions to his sons as they were growing up. As he was taught, his sons now teach their children. He also passed on strong family values that he learned from his parents. Raymond chose to stay close by and keep his family together. He was like his father, a man of action, rather than words. He is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Marlene (Leavitt) Sprague; two sons, Kevin Sprague and wife, Brenda, of Surry and John Sprague and wife, Marie, of Cushing; one daughter, Kim and husband, Jeffrey Newman, of Goose Creek, S.C.; six grandchildren, Christopher, April, Elisha, Rachael, Justin and Kelsey. He was predeceased by two brothers, Randell and Ellwood Sprague. Services of remembrance will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 2, at the First Baptist Church of Bar Harbor, with Pastor Scott Records, officiating. A reception will be held at the church following the service. Spring interment will be at Ledgelawn Cemetery, Bar Harbor. Contributions in Raymond’s memory may be made to the First Baptist Church, 46 Ledgelawn Ave., Bar Harbor, ME 04609.
