JONESPORT – Reginald “Reggie” A. Alley, 86, died Dec. 14, 2007, at Togus Veterans’ Hospital, Aug-usta, after a long illness. Reggie was born Aug. 19, 1921, in Jonesport, the son of the late Alonzo and Julie (Merchant) Alley. Reggie married Vannie Manchester in 1944. Prior to Reggie’s enlistment he worked at the Wesley C.C. Camp. He served in the Army Air Force during World War II on a crash boat in the Philippines. After being honorably discharged in 1946, Reggie returned to Jonesport, where he ran sardine carriers and then fished on his lobster boat the “Cindy Jen,” until he was 79 years old. Reggie was also well known for starring in a nationally aired U.S. Coast Guard television commercial in the 1980s. Reggie was a member of the Washington Chapter No. 16 of the Royal Arch Masons and Jonesport Masonic Lodge No. 188 for more than 50 years. He was also a member of the VFW, DAV, the American Legion and Knights of Pythias. Reggie is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Vannie (Manchester) Alley; a sister, Frances Pratt of Narraguagus Bay Health Care Facility, Milbridge; a son, Arthur Alley and wife, Mary, of Lamoine; two granddaughters, Cynthia Hawes and husband, Thomas, of Ellsworth and Jennifer Alley and husband, Eric Jacobson, of Arlington, Mass.; and a very special great-grandson, Derek Hawes. Reggie will be missed by his in-laws, Ivy Gould of Friendship and Katie Foss of Jonesport; special brother-in-law and friend, Philmore Smith and wife, Florence, and Dorothy White, all of Jonesport and Thurston Manchester of South Addison; many nieces, nephews, cousins and family friends; as well as two feline friends, Molly and Muffie. A special thanks to Dickie and Glenda Gray, and Sharon and Charles Lakeman. He was predeceased by a brother, Alston Alley of Machias. Visiting will be held 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Community of Christ Church, Jones-port, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 19, officiated by Elder Charles Lakeman. Burial will be private.
