CHERRYFIELD – Richard Carl Newton, 100, died at a Milbridge health care facility Sept. 12, 2004, following a brief illness. He was born Aug. 19, 1904, at Middletown, Conn. the son of Francis H. J. and Mary (Tracy) Newton. He received his B.S. degree at the Connecticut Agricultural College in Storrs, Conn. and his masters degree at the Massachusetts Agricultural College, Amherst, Mass. in 1930. He received the honoraries of Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Xi. He was employed by the U.S.D.A. in Agricultural Research Service from 1929 until his retirement in 1969. Richard married his wife, Marion Campbell of Cherryfield on Oct. 26, 1931, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was a member of the Entomological Society of America and the Congregational Church of Cherryfield. Richard enjoyed photography, artistic painting and collecting arrowheads. He is survived by a daughter, Mary Ann Watson and husband, Clifford, of Warrensburg, Mo.; two granddaughters, Janice Roemmich of Littleton, Colo. and Lisa Schliep of Howard Lake, Minn.; five great-grandchildren and many special friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Marion in 1989; two brothers, Tracy and Theodore Newton; one niece, Norma Newton; and one great-granddaughter, Hollie Lynn Schliep. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Monday at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 47 Main St., Milbridge, where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 14, 2004, with the Rev. Joe Palmer and the Rev. Ray Blaisdel officiating. Internment will be at Pine Grove Cemetery, Cherryfield. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Richard C. and Marion (Campbell) Newton Memorial Fund of the Congregational Church of Cherryfield, P.O. Box 104, Cherryfield, ME 04622 or the ARK Animal Shelter, Barbee Lane, Cherryfield.
