PORTLAND – Robert John Clifford, 93, of Ray Street, Portland, previously from Lincoln, died peacefully Feb. 5, 2005 in Portland. He was born May 31, 1911, in Lincoln, a son of Melvin and Florence Budge Clifford Robert attended Lincoln schools and on Sept. 22, 1936, he married his beloved wife of 66 years, Doris Neal, who died May 22, 2003. He spent most of his working life at Lincoln Pulp and Paper Mill. He built his own home and camp on waterfront land he cleared himself. He lived and enjoyed them for many years. He and “Dot” worked side by side gardening, cooking, caring for each other and the many people who came into their lives. Mr. Clifford was predeceased by his three sisters, Sadie Hammond, Alice McGraw, Bessie Gratton and a brother, Samuel Clifford. He is survived by one son, Robert R. Clifford and his wife, Arlen Riis, of West Paris; daughter, Elaine A. Shirfan and her husband, Antoine, of Scarborough. He shared a special relationship with grandsons, Francis, Mark and Alan Shirfan; granddaughters Andrea and Beth Clifford, Lynn Clifford Howe her husband, Mark, and their children Olivia and Zachary. Robert recently gave Zachary the rocking chair he had as a child and had passed on to his own children and grandchildren previously. His extended family included Andree Kehn, Patricia Baumhoff and her husband, Alex, Elizabeth and Madeline Baumhoff; and a special nephew, Thomas W. Hammond of Bangor, several nieces and nephews. The family is grateful for the supportive and caring environment provided at Fallbrook Woods Assisted Living Residence where Bob lived the past 2 years. A friend Gayle McGee spent many hours taking Bob for car rides, which he loved. Thank you to HomePartners for enriching Bob’s later years. Bob loved pets and Mike and Lori Galllagher’s visits with their dog were welcomed. Robert’s wife worked at the Mattanawcook Academy Library for many years and it was his wish to honor his wife by requesting contributions in lieu of flowers be made to Mattanawcook Academy Library Fund, 33 Reed St., Lincoln, ME 04457. There will be no visiting hours. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 12, 2005 at the Black Point Congregational Church in Scarborough. Arrangements are by the Hobbs Funeral Home.
