BAILEYVILLE – Robert Lee Smith, 79, died Monday, March 13, 2006, at a Calais hospital after a courageous battle with cancer. Bob was born July 3, 1926, in Bar Harbor, son of the late Paul and Ava (Davis) Smith. He served in the U.S. Air Force Band as a drummer. Bob married Gloria Gaddis, Nov. 22, 1950. He was an 8th grade teacher for Calais and Woodland schools for many years, then was employed by Georgia Pacific as a maintenance supervisor until his retirement. Along with his wife, he owned and operated Smith Greenhouse & Florist in Baileyville. Bob attended Peoples United Methodist Church in Baileyville, was a member of William T. Wren Post No.23 American Legion in Baileyville and enjoyed gardening and music. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Theodore Smith. Surviving are his loving wife of more than 55 years, Gloria; two children, Shirley McArthur of Baileyville and Martin Smith and wife, Wanda, of Alexander; four grandsons, Robert Smith and Tammy of Bangor, Chad Smith and Amy of Baileyville, Brian McCray of Baileyville and Christopher Everett of Milford; two granddaughters, Heather McCray of Baileyville and Dana Davis and husband, Glen, of Alexander; a great-grandson, Robert Lee Smith of Alexander; three great-grand-daughters, Kayla Marie Smith of Alexander, Mya Marie McCray of Baileyville and Alexis Annabelle Smith of Bangor; two sisters, Tootie Austin of Florida and Barbara Sonstrom of Connecticut; two brothers, Alfred and William Smith; many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, March 18, at Peoples United Methodist Church in Baileyville with Pastor Bernie Hammond officiating.
