SOUTH PORTLAND and PROUTS NECK, SCARBOROUGH – Robert M. Moulton, 83, passed away peacefully at his Prouts Neck home, Sunday, April 9, 2006. Bob was born Sept. 8, 1922, in Searsport, the son of Dr. Manning C. Moulton and Ina N. Moulton. After moving to Bangor at an early age, he attended Bangor schools and was a 1940 graduate of Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield. He spent a year at prep school at Severn Academy in Maryland. He was a graduate of the school of forestry at the University of Maine, Orono where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity and played football and basketball for the university. His education was interrupted by World War II when he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, achieving the rank of chief petty officer. While in the service Bob was coach of the U.S. Navy basketball team and played on the U.S. Navy baseball team. He spent more than two years in the Pacific Theatre. After the war he married Virginia Marion Krull of Long Island, N.Y. Dec. 8, 1945. After finishing college after the war, Bob and Virginia moved to Baldwin, N.Y. before returning to live in South Portland, in the early 60’s, where he was plumbing contractor. Bob was a big fan of all sports and after competing in his early years, enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren’s games. His favorite pastime was spending time at his summer home at Prouts Neck. He was predeceased by his parents; two sisters, Virginia Emory of Bangor, Margaret McKee of Camden and Dedham; his wife, Virginia on April 15, 1988; great-granddaughter, Zoe Gironda in 2004; his dear friend, Patricia Frech in the fall of 2005. Survivors include his three sons, William Moulton and wife, Elizabeth, of Cumberland, Edward Moulton and wife, Susan, of Westbrook, Donald Moulton and wife, Jodi, of Portland; two daughters, Margaret Frey and husband, Gus, of Brewer and Dorothy Woods of Portland; brother, Dr. Gardner Moulton of Bangor; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews; also surviving are ‘special’ cousins, Barbara Chase of Scarborough, Elizabeth Moulton of Scarborough and Linwood Morrell of Fairfield, Conn. Visiting hour will be held 9-11 a.m. Friday, April 14, at the Hobbs Funeral Home, 230 Cottage Rd., South Portland, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. burial to follow at Black Point Cemetery.
