BREWER – Robert S. Andrews, 89, died March 6, 2007, at a Bangor health care center. He was born Sept. 20, 1917, in Brewer, the son of Robert and Elizabeth (Strang) Andrews. Robert enlisted in the Maine Army National Guard in 1941 serving most of the four years active duty with the 152nd Field Artillery, 43rd Division in the Pacific theatre during World War II. He served several campaigns including Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, New Guinea, landings in Lingayen Gulf and Luzon and the Philippine Liberation. He retired from Eastern Fine Paper in 1985 having spent many years involved in personnel, safety and as manager of coater sales and service. He was a member of several organizations including the Isaac E. Clewley VFW Post No. 4917, Brewer, where he was a life member and past commander, life and honorary member of the Ralph J. Pollard Lodge, AF & AM, Orrington and the Anah Temple Shrine Accadamations. He was also a founding member of what is now the Brewer Federal Credit Union, having served as manager and served many years on the credit committee. Robert loved to travel, cruise and spent many winters in Florida. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved golfing and football. His family thanks the B Unit staff of the Maine Veterans’ Home for the care they provided. He is survived by his wife, Marion (Thomas) Andrews of Brewer; two children, Steven Andrews and his wife, Nancy, of Holden and Kathleen Hamel and her husband, Brian, of Dedham; two grandchildren, Kimberly Lucy and her husband, James, of Portsmouth, N.H., and Heather Russell and her husband, Kevin, of Brewer; three great-grandchildren, Hunter and Hannah Russell and Grace Lucy; one sister, Hazel Clewley of Bangor; many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Arthur and Harris. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer, where family and friends may visit 10 a.m. until the time of service. The Rev. Tracy Reeves, pastor of the North Brewer-Eddington United Methodist Church will preside. Private burial will be at the Maine Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery, Mount Vernon Road, Augusta. In lieu of flowers, cards and condolences would be welcomed and appreciated by Robert’s family.
