BUCKSPORT – Roger Herbert Foster, 85, loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather died Jan. 30, 2006, at his home in Bucksport. He was born Aug. 18, 1920, in Limestone, to Edward and Doris Foster. He was the valedictorian of his Limestone High School class, was a potato farmer for 30 years, a Grand Master of the Limestone Masonic Lodge, selectman and town manager for the town of Limestone and active in community affairs. In 1974, he moved his family to Bucksport, where he served as town manager for 10 years. During this period he was active in the Maine Municipal Association and served on several advisory committees. In 1982, he received the Maine Town and City Management Association Manager of the Year award. He retired in 1984 and spent many good years visiting his children who had spread to the winds. He was an avid canoeist, fisherman and hunter and instilled this love of the outdoors in his family. After a family trip down the St. John River to celebrate his retirement he wrote a book, “How to do the 114 Mile St. John River Canoe Trip with 16 People, 1 Dog, 6 Canoes and a Kayak.” He was also active with the Salvation Army and a member of the Limestone United Methodist Church for over 50 years. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Vada (Hanson) Foster; one daughter, Carolyn Boyd and her friend, Diane, of Magnolia, N.C.; four sons, Stephen and wife, Theresa, of Havelock, N.C., Jon and wife, Diane, of Colleyville, Texas, Randall and wife, Pat, of Hudson, N.C., Peter and wife, Vicki, of Farmington; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. He will be intered at the Advent Cemetery, Limestone. A burial ceremony will be announced. Funeral services will be held 3 p.m. Feb. 4, at the East Bucksport United Methodist Church, 71 Church Rd., off Route 46 near Hancock Pond, with Pastor Peter Remick presiding. The family will receive guests following the service. Donations in his memory can be made to the Limestone United Methodist Church, 2 Burleigh St., Limestone, in lieu of flowers.
