RUTH ESTELLE (ORCUTT) GRINDAL SEDGWICK – Ruth Estelle (Orcutt) Grindal, 94, died May 7, 2004, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital, Blue Hill. She was born June 3, 1909, in North Sedgwick, the daughter of John E. and Marion Faye (Carter) Orcutt. She grew up on the family farm in North Sedgwick, and as a child she attended grammar school there. She graduated from Sedgwick High School in the Class of 1926, and then from Beals Business School in Bangor. On Sept. 23, 1933, Ruth married Theodore “Ted” A. Grindal. Prior to the beginning of World War II, Ruth moved with her husband to Portland, where she worked at the Eastern Hotel. When Ted joined the Navy Ruth moved home to be with her family. She worked as a secretary/bookkeeper for many years at the Blue Hill Garage until her retirement. Ruth helped Ted with the blueberry farm, which had been in her family for three generations and greatly enjoyed watching the two younger generations of the family harvest the hay crop in July and the blueberries in August. She also enjoyed family outings at Walker Pond in Brooksville. Ruth was a long time member of the North Sedgwick Baptist Church. Ruth was predeceased by her husband, Ted, in 1995; her daughter, Susan Faye; and her sister, Gertrude Clapp. She is survived by her son, Bruce F. Grindal and his wife, Linette, of Sedgwick; five grandchildren, Stacie A. Cousins and her husband, Michael, of Vandenburg AFB, Calif., Jonathan T. Grindal and his companion, Melissa Walker, of Blue Hill, Timothy H. Grindal and his wife, Annalee, of Blue Hill, Tobias A. Grindal and Jocob O. Grindal of Sedgwick; three great-grandchildren, Abigail, Adam and Caleb Cousins of California; many special nieces and nephews. Special thanks to Ruth’s caregivers, Sandy Oliver and Wahneeta Carter, who made it possible for her to spend the remaining years at home with her family. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, 2004, at the North Sedgwick Baptist Church, with Pastor Kevin Smart officiating. Interment will follow at the Pine Grove Cemetery in North Sedgwick. Friends and family are asked to gather at the church after committal services.
