FREEPORT – Sharon (Littlefield) Kittredge, passed away at the home of her devoted sister, Muriel Littlefield and her husband, Ken Toner, in Freeport, Feb. 1, 2006, following a long, courageous battle with cancer. She was born March 13, 1947, the eldest of Donald and Esther Littlefield of Corinna. A life long learner, Sharon graduated Corinna Union Academy and subsequently earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Maine Orono, a master’s degree from the University of Southern Maine and numerous professional certificates. She studied with the Reiki master, Kristin Watson and explored the world of the spirit with energy and devotion. Sharon lived for 10 years in New York City, N.Y. studying at New York University and immersing herself in the creative energy of Greenwich Village in the 1970’s. She returned to her roots in Maine in 1980 and made the greater Portland area her home for the remainder of her life. A person well known for her compassion and tireless dedication to making life easier for those less fortunate, she worked for the past 14 years as an advocate and counselor with Portland’s homeless population. Sharon was blessed with beautiful blue eyes that saw the truth and humanity in everyone and reflected the love and light she saw so clearly all around her. A dedicated family member, Sharon cherished the summers she shared with family and friends at Big Indian Pond in St. Albans. Born Sharon Laura Littlefield, she is survived by her only son, Mark Rodney Irish, his life partner, David Schmittou; her mother, Esther Littlefield of Corinna; a sister, Muriel Littlefield and husband, Kenneth Toner, of Freeport; a brother, Kerbon Littlefield and wife, Gail, of Corinna; a niece, Hillary Carter and husband, Jason, of Ellsworth; a nephew, Ezekiel Toner of Guilford; Tracy Farnham and husband, Steve, of Winslow and Tim Wilbur of Portland; many aunts, uncles and cousins, as well as many co-workers and loving friends. Sharon was predeceased by her father, Donald Littlefield in July 2004. The family extends a heartfelt thanks to all the extended family members, friends and co-workers who helped support Sharon during her long difficult illness. In accordance with Sharon’s wishes, family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of her life 2 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Masonic Temple, Mallett Drive, Freeport. A graveside service and burial will be held in the summer. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the American Juvenile Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 1132, Fairfax, VA 22038 or to the South Portland Cancer Community Center, 778 Main St., South Portland, ME 04106.
