HOULTON – Stephen Hogan Smith, 63, beloved and adored by all who knew him, died Jan. 28, 2004, at home with his family. He was born Nov. 13, 1940, in Houlton, the son of Madge Lorraine (Hogan) Smith and Obed Foss Smith. Stephen was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He was a devoted family man and was known for his boisterous laugh and infectious smile. He was full of life, and everyone who met him was warmed by his amazing spirit. During his many years of plumbing he befriended numerous clients and was aptly named the “Michelangelo of Copper” by one of them. Stephen attended Houlton schools and was a graduate of Houlton High School, Class of 1958, and a graduate of Maine Vocational Technical Institute in South Portland, Class of 1961. He was a member of the Houlton First Baptist Church and was active in numerous church committees, served on the Houlton Town Council and the S.A.D. No. 29 School Board. He was a plumber for 43 years at Smith Brothers Plumbing and Heating, a family owned business passed down through five generations, and served 11 years in the Air National Guard. He was a lifetime member of Monument Lodge of Masons No. 96 AF & AM, Member of the Blue Lodge Chapter, Aldermar Commandry, Knights Templar and the Anah Temple Shrine. Stephen especially loved gardening, travel, dancing, learning new things and enjoying the outdoors with his family. Stephen will continue to live through his wife of 32 years, Astrid Folsom Smith; daughter, Genevieve Smith and her fianc‚, James Doane Jr. of South Portland, daughter, Elizabeth and her husband, Jeff Moore, of Missoula, Mont.; son, David Smith of Portland, son, Frank and his wife, Katie Smith, of Bath; two grandsons, Samuel Doane and Addison Smith; sister, Linda Smart and her husband, David Smart, of Scarborough; brother, Spencer Smith and his wife, Barbara Smith, of Thomaston; mother-in-law, Agnes Folsom of Houlton; sisters and brothers-in-law, Clarice and David Scotton of Cape Elizabeth, Carlene and Paul Romanelli of Houlton, Kathy and Mark Anderson of Houlton; 14 nieces and nephews; 13 great-nieces and great-nephews; and countless other friends he met along the way. He will also be missed by his loyal dog, Douglas; and Alex, the cat. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday at the Houlton First Baptist Church with the Rev. Art Myers officiating.
