PORTLAND – Thelma C. Hale, 86, resident of Ray Street, Portland, formerly of Victor Road, Portland, died Thursday, July 6, 2006, at Fallbrook Woods, Portland. She was born July 8, 1919, in Brooklin, a daughter of Arthur and Flora (Giles) Cole. She attended schools in Brooklin and graduated from Brooklin High School, Class of 1937. She entered nursing school and graduated from the Maine General Hospital School of Nursing, Class of 1940. She was employed at Maine General Hospital before she went to work in industrial nursing at the South Portland Shipyard in 1942. She went on to private duty nursing until her retirement in 1981. Mrs. Hale was a member of the M.S.N.A. and the Maine General Hospital Alumni Association. She was a longtime member of the Central Square Baptist Church of Portland. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert W. Hale who died in 1998. She is survived by a daughter, Sandra and her husband, Robert “Bill” Smith of Westbrook; and two grandchildren, Robert H. Smith of Westbrook and Rebecca L. Smith of Portland. A memorial service will be held 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 30, at the Central Square Baptist Church, Stevens Avenue, Portland, with the Rev. Daryl Lavway officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made in Mrs. Hale’s memory to the Alzheimer’s Association, Maine Chapter, 163 Lancaster St., Portland, ME 04101. Arrangements are by Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, Portland.
