BANGOR – Vangel Asimakopoulos, 62, died Dec. 13, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born May 6, 1944, in Nashua, N.H., the son of George and Helen (Balam) Asimakopoulos. He graduated from the University of Maine, was a U.S. Navy veteran and a Merchant Marine who worked for the State of Maine ferry service. Vangel was a member of the American Legion Post 84 of Orono, Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity and NAACP. He loved to cook and take rides with his dogs, Ali and Baxter, and treat them to ice cream. Vangel was predeceased by his parents. Survivors include his wife of 38 years, Nancy Asimakopoulos of Bangor; son, Aaron Asimakopoulos of New Jersey; daughter, Alexandra Asimakopoulos of Bangor; brother, Chuck Asimakopoulos of New Hampshire; sisters, Sandra Asimakopoulos of Florida and Marina Perkey of New Hampshire; as well as a special friend, Linda Edelstein-Morse. Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 16, at United Methodist Church, 36 Oak St., Orono, with Pastor David Grainger and Chuck Langbein officiating. Those who wish may make donations in Vangel’s memory to a charity of choice. Arrangements are under the care of Direct Cremation of Maine, 182 Waldo Ave., Belfast.
