BANGOR – Vera Robbins Chaples, 97, went home to be with the Lord, Dec. 15, 2006, at a local nursing home. She was born Aug. 15, 1909, in Bangor, daughter of George and Marguerite Maunder. For more than 50 years she was an active member of Hudson Baptist Church, serving many years as Sunday school teacher. She enjoyed singing in the choir and served on the deaconess board. She was “Grammie Vera” to almost everyone who knew her, and loved by young and old alike. Her talent for sewing was enjoyed by her children and grandchildren. She will always be remembered for her faithfulness to the Lord she loved, her commitment to her church and her many hours of prayer for her family and friends. She is survived by a son, Gene Robbins of Bangor; four daughters, Mavis Robbins Hussey of Alton, Gloria Robbins Anderson of Orono, Shirley Robbins Strout and her husband, Myron, of Bangor and Lorrie Robbins Hartley and her husband, Russel, of Westbrook; one sister, Mattie Hitchcock and husband, Len, of Arthurette, New Brunswick; 19 grandchildren, 42 great- grand-children; 17 great-great-grand-children, several nieces and nephews, including a very special nephew, Larry McClure; four stepchildren and spouses, Bill and Joanne Esancy, Mark and Mary Lou Drake, Peter Chaples and Philip Chaples. She was predeceased by her first husband, Fred Robbins in 1974, after 45 years of marriage. Her second husband, Lloyd Chaples died in 1992, after 10 years of marriage. She was predeceased by three brothers, John Hetherington, Ernest Maunder and George Maunder; one sister, Doris Coffin. Relatives and friends are invited to call 4-6 p.m. Monday, Dec. 18, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 19, at Hudson Baptist Church with the Rev. Garnett Chute, pastor of Hermon Baptist Church, officiating. Interment will be at Pushaw Cemetery, Hudson. There will be a time of sharing and refreshments immediately after the service at Hudson Town Hall. In lieu of flowers, Vera requested that gifts in her memory be sent to the Hudson Baptist Church Youth Ministries, P.O. Box 187, Hudson, ME 04409 or a charity of one’s choice.
