BANGOR and BREWER Waldo “Wally” O. Grindal, 85, husband of the late Joan (Walker) Grindal, died Feb. 13, 2007, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Aug. 30, 1921, in Bangor, the son of Walton and Christina (Douglass) Grindal. Wally was a veteran during World War II, serving in the U.S. Army Air Corp as a ball turret gunner on a B17 plane. He served with the 483rd Bombardment Group (H) a40th squadron stationed out of Italy. After the war Wally received his pilot’s license in 1946 and then in 1948 he earned his flight instructors license for commercial and individual pilots and taught for 54 years. He amassed more than 12,000 hours of flying time within his career. He also held other fulltime careers during his life with Eastern Fine Paper, Brewer and General Electric Co., Bangor, where he retired from in 1984. He was a member of the Eagles Club No. 3177, Brewer, and the Isaac E. Clewley VFW Post No. 4917, Brewer. He enjoyed flying his seaplane down to his camp on Pleasant River Lake and spending time with family and friends. He is survived by two sons, Edward Grindal of Hermon, and Rick Grindal and his wife, Loretta, of Bangor; a stepson, Theodore Greeman of Indiana; eight grandchildren, several great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Phyllis L. Walker; one niece and two nephews. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was predeceased by one son, Robert Grindal; and a brother, Raymond. Friends may call 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 15, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Feb. 16, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor, with the Rev. Clayton Blackstone officiating. Relatives and friends are invited to meet 1:45 p.m. Friday at Mount Hope Cemetery, Superintendents Lodge, State Street entrance.
