BASS HARBOR – W. Stanley Reed, 88, died July 10, 2006, in Bar Harbor. He was born March 5, 1918, in Tremont, the son of Hollis G. and Lillian (Rich) Reed. Stanley was a veteran of World War II, serving in the 4th Armored Division and Army Air Force. He was the former owner and operator of the store at Bass Harbor, known as H. G. Reed, Inc., and the plumbing, heating and electrical business which was later moved to a new building on the Bass Harbor Road in Southwest Harbor which is now under the direction of his son, Bradley A. Reed. He also owned and operated the W. Stanley Reed Insurance Agency for 45 years. He was educated in the Tremont Elementary School and graduated from Pemetic High School, Southwest Harbor and Gorham Normal School, now the University of Southern Maine. He also did graduate work at the University of West Virginia at Morgantown and Gorham State Teachers College. Prior to World War II, he taught at the following Maine Schools: Pennell Institute in Gray, Williams High School in Oakland and the Walton School in Auburn. Fraternally, he was a member and past master of Tremont Lodge No. 77 AF & AM of Southwest Harbor, a member of Acadia Chapter No. 31, Royal Arch Masons of Ellsworth, life member of Blanquefort Commandery No. 13 Knights Templar of Ellsworth, life sponsor of Knights Templar Eye Foundation, member and past president of Hancock County Shrine Club and member of Anna Temple Shrine of Bangor. He was a life member of Eugene M. Norwood Post No. 69, the American Legion, a member, director and past president of the Mount Desert Island Lions Club and he was honored with a Melvin Jones Fellow Award for Dedicated Humanitarian Services by the Lions Clubs International Foundation. He served under five Maine governors as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Maine Port Authority regarding the Maine Ferry Service. He was also an unsuccessful candidate of the Maine State Legislature. Locally, he was a member of the superintending school committee for 15 years and was one of the original incorporators of the Tremont Volunteer Fire Department, acting fire chief and assistant chief for 10 years, trustee of Seal Cove Water District, trustee of Bass Harbor Memorial Library and trustee of Mount Desert High School for more than 28 years. At various times he had served on the following town boards or committees: warrant committee, planning board, Harbor Improvement Committee, Cemetery Committee, member and director of Tremont Chamber of Commerce, member of National Park Advisory Committee, president of Tremont Historical Society, president of McKinley Cemetery Corporation and treasurer of Hillrest Cemetery Association. Stanley was active in his church, serving for many years as trustee and deacon of the Olsen Memorial Congregational Church of Bass Harbor. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Doris (Cunningham) Reed of Bass Harbor; two sons and their wives, Bradley A. Reed and Dorothy (Vine) Reed of Bass Harbor, Rev. Dana C. Reed and Katherine (Stetson) Reed of Windham; four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to call 5-7 p.m. Friday, July 21, at Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday with the Rev. David Underwood officiating. Interment will be at Hillrest Cemetery, West Tremont.
