BANGOR – Mittie D. Stevens, 88, peacefully passed on to her heavenly Lord July 10, 2006. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister. She was born March 23, 1918, in Plymouth, the daughter of Winfred and Nellie (Howes) Downs. She attended schools in Plymouth; graduated from Newport High School and Eastern States Normal School in Castine. She later earned her masters degree from the University of Maine. She was an energetic and enthusiastic teacher in school systems in Maine, Connecticut and Florida covering a span of 48 years. She was past worthy matron of John R. Chase Chapter OES No. 129 of Carmel. Mittie had a wonderful life. She spent her retirement years with her husband of 63 years, Vaughn A. Stevens of Bangor, in Florida before returning to Maine in 2002. Together they traveled the country, tended their flower gardens and spent precious time with their family. She was predeceased by her husband, Vaughn; her granddaughter, Heather Marie Page; and her brother-in-law, Paul MacLeod Sr. She is survived by her son, Winfred Stevens and his wife, Pat, of Bangor and their three daughters, Kathleen Stevens Walker and her husband, David, of Bangor, Amy Stevens Brook and her husband, Chris and their two sons, Benjamin and Andrew of Bangor, Sara Rose Stevens of Bangor and her daughter, Nellie Vonn Stevens Page and her husband, David, of Bristol, Conn. and their two children, Amber Elizabeth Page and Kyle Lewis Page, both of Bristol, Conn.; her sister, Louise MacLeod Rabbitt and her husband, Thomas; and many special nieces and nephews. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 13, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held noon Friday, July 14, with the Rev. Peter Sprague, pastor of the Columbia Street Baptist Church, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith, Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor, after the service.
