SOUTH BEND, IND. – William C. Saltzman died Aug. 19, 2004, with his wife, Florence and his children at his side. Bill as he was always known, was born April 11, 1916, the son of Louis and Julia Saltzman, of Bangor. He was a 1938 graduate of the University of Maine and received a Bachelor’s degree in English. He pursued his love of journalism and while at the University, he was the sports correspondent for the Bangor Daily News. During World War II, he served for 44 months in the Signal Corps, which included 18 months in the European theatre. Upon returning home he became a copy editor for the Bangor Daily Commercial. This was the beginning of his journey for his love of journalism. From Bangor he went to work for the Associated Press in Portland. He worked there for several years, and then went on to become the News Editor of the South Bend Tribune, for 33 years. His former city editor referred to him as the purest newspaper man he ever met. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, his two children, Steven Saltzman and Marcia Arnholt; his brothers, Elmer, and Robert; and four grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister, Ada of Philadelphia, Pa.
