PENOBSCOT – William R. Mulquin, 89, died July 5, 2005, at his home in Penobscot, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Dec. 12, 1915, in Belmont County, Ohio. He graduated in 1937 from Ohio State University and went to work for Bethlehem Steel in Sparrows Point, Md., as a metallurgical engineer. During World War II, he served in the 7th Division in the Pacific and was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service. He returned to Baltimore where he worked until his retirement from Bethlehem Steel in 1978. During his retirement in Maine, he was involved in numerous activities. He was a former member of the Bagaduce Choral and played the clarinet in the Castine Town Band and a number of jazz combos. He was an active member of Trinity Episcopal Church in Castine and before that in St. Francis Episcopal Church in Blue Hill. His volunteer service included Blue Hill Hospice and visitation at area nursing and care facilities. He enjoyed the company of his many friends and neighbors in Penobscot and the surrounding area. He was an avid bridge and cribbage player. He maintained contact with friends from Baltimore. He and his wife spent winter months in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Elizabeth McClean Mulquin; his daughters, Martha Sawyer and husband, Tom, in Baltimore, Anne Parker and husband, Lin, in Penobscot, and Ellen Mulquin and husband, Joe Sullivan, in Bethesda, Md.; as well as by three grandchildren, Matthew Parker and wife, Kristin, Jennifer Holtz and husband, Chris, and Daniel Sawyer; and by great-grandchildren Jake Parker and William Holtz. He is also survived by his sisters, Janice Greider and Jeanne Wood. He is predeceased by his granddaughter, Rebecca Sawyer; and his sister, Evelyn Johnson. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, July 8 at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Castine.
