REV. DONALD MANNING HINCKLEY – AUGUSTA – The Rev. Donald Manning Hinckley, 88, died Oct. 13, 2008, in Augusta, after an extended period of declining health. He was an ordained minister of Universalist-Unitarian faith, having actively served for 60 years. The Rev. Hinckley graduated from high school in Windsor, Vt.; attended Green Mountain College, Poultney, Vt.; and attained a Bachelor of Theology from Bangor Theological Seminary and a Master of Divinity in 1946. He was a graduate of Colby College in 1946. He served parishes in Waterville, Pittsfield, West Paris, Auburn, Houlton and Worcester, Mass. His most recent work was for All Souls Universalist-Unitarian Church, Oakland. During his early years in the Universalist-Unitarian denomination he served many administrative positions with the Northeast District of the Universalist-Unitarian Association. He was beloved by all of his many parishioners. Don played tennis until his 84th year. He was a scholar, a student of the opera and classical music. He enjoyed his hobby of hi-fi. In his early years, he served on school boards in Pittsfield and Auburn, and volunteered at Goodwill Industries. The Rev. Hinckley was predeceased by his parents; a brother, Burton; and a sister, Marjorie. His wife of 29 years, Rosalyn (Ingalls) Hinckley, survives. Also surviving is daughter, Marsha Donahue Curlew and her husband, Wayne, of Millinocket; grandson, Taylor Donahue of Portland; son, Glenn Hinckley and his wife, Linda, of West Sumner; granddaughters, Jennifer Waterman, Sarah Hinckley, Hannah Flannery and Emily Ellis; three great-granddaughters and two great-grandsons. Also surviving are stepdaughters, Nell Ingalls of Illinois and Candice (Ingalls) Hinckley of Pennsylvania; a brother, Gerald Hinckley; a sister, Mary Lou Lamphere; his former wife, Barbara Sprague Hinckley of Auburn; many nieces and nephews. Don’s family wishes to thank all the many caregivers who so patiently and kindly helped with his care. A graveside service for the family will be held at Gracelawn Memorial Park, Auburn, at a later date. Memorial donations may be made to the church or charity of your choice in the Rev.
