WOODLAND – Rodney Peter DeMerchant, 62, died Oct. 29, 2008, in Caribou. He was born Oct. 10, 1946, in Caribou, the son of the late Oscar and Francis (Ginn) DeMerchant. Rodney attended Caribou schools and was employed by several area trucking companies for more than 30 years. He was also employed at the former Loring Air Force Base in grounds and snow removal. He married Diana Leavitt, Sept. 27, 1980. Rodney was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He enjoyed boating with his family and loved riding in the woods with them looking for wildlife. He loved to cook and kept his family well fed, even when they weren’t hungry. He taught his sons how to hunt, fish, respect and appreciate all aspects of nature. He was a member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Church. Surviving, in addition to his wife, Diane of Woodland, are two sons, Michael DeMerchant and his girlfriend, Amelia Langley, of Orono and Christopher DeMerchant of Woodland; two daughters and sons-in-law, Angela and Bryan Beswick of Indianapolis and Yolanda and Ed Sockabasin of Perry; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Philip and Kathy DeMerchant of Sumter, S.C., and Jim and Judy DeMerchant of Fort Fair-field; one sister and brother-in-law, Susan and David Forcier of Dalzell, S.C.; two grandchildren, Rebecca Green and Shannon Beswick; several nieces and nephews. Mr. DeMerchant was predeceased by a brother, Bobby in 1972. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Thursday at Mockler Funeral Home, 24 Reservoir St., Caribou.
