SANGERVILLE – Dorothy Flanders Campbell, 95, died Nov. 4, 2008, at her home. Dorothy was born Dec. 26, 1912, in Sangerville, daughter of Willie and Mina (Howard) Flanders. She was a beloved member of the East Sangerville community. Noted for the sparkle in her eye, gentle demeanor and capable abilities, she exemplified the best of what we like to think of as Maine attributes. She graduated from Sangerville High School in 1931, then attended nursing school at Eastern Maine General Hospital. She curtailed her education after the death of her father, when she came home to help with the family. She married Lewis Campbell in 1936 and they later went to live on the Howard farm that had belonged to a favorite grandmother, Abigail. They lived on that farm for the remainder of their lives. A dedicated member of East Sangerville Union Church, she taught Sunday school, Bible school, kept the church in good order and arranged flowers for the sanctuary from her or her neighbors’ gardens each Sunday. Many neighborhood children will remember being a participant of the Work and Win 4-H Club and the associated projects, demonstrations and weekly lively meetings that that membership entailed. Like so many other families, Lewis’ and her greatest joys involved their family-being an essential part of each of their lives. The love they gave to each member was reciprocated by a genuine devotion. Next was the appreciation of the natural beauty of the four seasons of Maine-a beauty that influenced their positive view of life. During her later years, Dorothy was heartened by the many acts of kindness of her friends, neighbors and family: from the caring upkeep of the farm, to flowers from Brian, plowing snow, delivery of a yearly Christmas tree, visits, cards and the friendly toot of the horn and waves as she sat on her porch, “watching the world go by.” She was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Lewis; a son-in-law, Craig Dore; as well as sisters, Edith and Ruth; and brother, Roy. She is survived by her daughters and their families, Joyce and Ralph Harvey and sons, Russell and Randal; daughter-in-law, Elaine and great-grandsons, Tyler and Charles; Janice Dore and her children, Melissa and Christopher. Her brother and his wife, Ardell and Ruth Flanders; sister, Wilma Matz; sisters-in-law, Mary Flanders and Shirley Campbell; as well as a number of nieces and nephews, also survive her. She would want special recognition to be made of the loyalty and thoughtfulness of her niece, Betty Richardson; and nephew, Brian Campbell, to their “Aunt Dot.” A memorial service will be conducted 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9, at Dover-Foxcroft United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dodie Sheffield officiating. In lieu of flowers, those who wish may find a way to assist others on their life’s journey as a fitting tribute to Dorothy’s memory. Arrangements are in the care of Lary Funeral Home. Messages of condolence and memories may be expressed at www.laryfuneralhome.com. “Well done, my good and faithful servant…”
