BLUE HILL – Lena R. Duffy, 91, died Nov. 4, 2008, at a Blue Hill hospital. She was born Oct. 24, 1917, in Blue Hill, the daughter of Leslie T. and Vera B. (Bickford) Candage. She graduated from George Stevens Academy in 1935 and worked for many years at Blue Hill Hospital. She loved playing her piano, and was active in community services, including the Cemetery Association and was a member of South Blue Hill Baptist Church. She enjoyed selling tickets at the community suppers and collecting money for the many yard sales up to the time of her passing. She never missed an opportunity to go places with her many dear friends and was always involved with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and their daily activities. As the family would fondly comment when we would try to call her without success, “Well, Gram Duff is on the road again!” Lena is survived by a daughter, Jane L. Friend and husband, Don, of Bath; four grandchildren, Mark W. Friend and wife, Connie, of Glastonbury, Conn., Shelly Friend Holmquist and husband, Carl, of Gray, Shawn H. Duffy of Brooksville and Kelly A. Sommer and husband, Lee, of North Palm Beach, Fla.; nine great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandson; sister-in-law, Edith Candage of Blue Hill; and several other special family and friends. Lena was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Hobart A. Duffy; a son, Walter H. Duffy; and a brother, George L. Candage. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, at South Blue Hill Baptist Church. Interment will be afterward at South Blue Hill Cemetery.
