GIG HARBOR, Wash. – Dick Van Sickle passed away peacefully Nov. 1, 2008, with his wife by his side, after suffering complications from a stroke. He was born March 28, 1943, in South Portland. Dick joined the U.S. Army in 1960, retiring after 22 years of service. During that time he served two separate yearlong tours in Vietnam and earned many medals, including the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal and Bronze Star Medal. In 1982, he went to work for Metlife Leasing Corp., which became General Electric, and eventually retired in 2001. Dick and Mary Ellen finally settled and have lived in Gig Harbor, Wash., for the last 17 years. Dick had a special love for his dog and took her everywhere he went. He enjoyed life to the fullest and provided a full life for his family, which included boating, camping, fishing, hunting, traveling, snow skiing and water skiing. He was well known for being able to fix anything. Dick will be greatly missed by his high school sweetheart and loving wife of 48 years, Mary Ellen. He is also survived by his daughters, Lorie Tucker and Lisa and Chris Sunich; grandchildren, Abigail, Casey and Garrett; many extended family members. He also leaves behind his beloved dog, Sasha. He was predeceased by his mother, Cora Byers; and son, Brian. Dick was truly loved and had many wonderful friends and neighbors. A very special thank-you to all of the staff at Multicare Medical Center for all of the care and support they provided to Dick and his family. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 7, at Haven of Rest Funeral Home, Gig Harbor, Wash. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Multiple Sclerosis Society, Pierce County Humane Society or to a charity of your choice. Gone Fishing!
