ORLAND, Maine — An Ellsworth man died Friday from injuries suffered in a two-vehicle crash at a four-way intersection.

Andrew Horchler, 57, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which occurred about 11:25 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. Route 1 and Upper Falls Road, according to personnel from the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department.

Horchler was in the process of turning from Upper Falls Road onto Route 1 when his silver 2001 Honda Civic was struck on the passenger side by a white 2001 Dodge pickup truck driven by Daniel Dodge, 17, of Brooksville, who was traveling west on Route 1, police said.

Dodge and a passenger, 17-year-old Dale Pollard of Orland, suffered minor injuries in the crash. Both received medical treatment at the scene.

The impact was such that Dodge’s pickup pushed Horchler’s car across the roadway, police said in a news release.

Police said that a third vehicle that was not directly involved in the crash but that was making a turn from Route 1 onto the Upper Falls Road blocked the visibility of the two drivers involved in the crash.

Traffic was rerouted around the accident on Gray Meadow Road, a dispatcher said. The affected section of Route 1 was reopened to traffic nearly five hours after the accident.

The accident remains under investigation by Deputy Jeff McFarland, Sgt. Alan Brown and Chief Deputy Richard Bishop, all of the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department. Lt. Patrick Kane, also of the county sheriff’s department staff, will reconstruct the crash.

Orland firefighters and ambulance personnel from Bucksport assisted police at the scene.
