DEER ISLE – Samuel “Sam” W. Judkins, 92, passed away Nov. 10, 2008, at Blue Hill Hospital, after a brief illness. He was born Aug. 14, 1916, in Stonington, son of the late Frank and Stella Judkins. Sam was a self-taught musician and could play many instruments. He had a band in his younger years. Sam worked as a machinist most of his life and in his later years worked at Billings Diesel in the shop. He had a talent for being able to design different parts for a boat to fit the need of the fisherman. Sam was an avid reader, especially enjoying historical novels. Sam also enjoyed fishing, hunting and collecting guns. He was a lifetime member of Marine Deer Isle Masonic Lodge No. 122 AF & AM. He had a knack for making friends with everyone. Sam will be remembered as a quiet, patient and gentle man, and passed in that same gentle manner. Sam grew up in Stonington and married Harriet Larrabee. Together they raised four children, Norma, Paul, Sandra and Ann. He was predeceased by his first wife, Harriet; a son, Paul; and siblings, Francis, Leonard, David, Irving, Annie and Lucy. Sam is survived by his wife, Edith “Peggy” Judkins; and daughters, Norma Vickerson and husband, Harry, of Deer Isle, Sandra Jones and husband, Bruce, of Stonington and Ann Yatzook and husband, Walter, of Meriden, Conn. Also surviving are his grandchildren, whom he took great joy in, 10 grandsons, six granddaughters, many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sister, Sadie Frejlach of California; many nieces and nephews; and a special friend, George Aldridge of Deer Isle. Services will be private. An announcement will be made at a later date of a celebration of life to be held at the Masonic Hall.
