SCARBOROUGH – Richard Arnold Plummer, 74, of Scarborough, died peacefully Nov. 18, 2008, surrounded by his family and loved ones in the amazing Gibson Pavilion at Maine Medical Center. Plummer died due to complications from cancer. He was born Oct. 15, 1934, in Fort Fairfield, to James Arnold and Madeline Cogswell Plummer. He was raised on the family potato farm in Fort Fairfield and graduated from Fort Fairfield High School in 1952. He was a member of Phi Eta Kappa fraternity and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono in 1957. After graduating college, Richard went to work for Scarborough School System as a physical ed and history teacher. He would work there for 39 years before retiring in 1995. He was best known for his accolades as a coach. “Coach Plummer” touched many lives of the kids that came through the Scarborough School System and through the athletic programs. He coached the “Redskin” soccer team for more than 26 years, winning the respect of his colleagues, players, referees and fellow coaches. Plummer’s teams were known for their work ethic, and determination to get the job done! His teams won consecutive Class A Soccer State Championships in 1973, 1974, 1975 and 1976. His teams were always known for appearances and post season play, and you could always count on them to be ready to play whether they were the favorite or the underdog. He was most proud the 2008 Scarborough soccer team in their undefeated season and eventual State Championship. He watched their progress closely throughout the season as his health slowly declined. Plummer had been the timer and score keeper at all the home soccer games in recent years and always stayed close to the program that he started in the early ’60s. He coached basketball for 17 years and baseball for 15 years. Plummer was known as “Coach Plummer” in the community and spent his life teaching kids valuable lessons about athletics and life. He was known for his quick wit, sense of humor, and positive attitude and very few people made it through the halls of Scarborough High School without knowing that about him. He started a local landscape company and had done that since his retirement. Plummer was always proud of his Aroostook County roots and returned “up home” as often as he could to visit friends, relatives and close family. Coach Plummer was deeply loved and will be sadly missed by his children, Randy Plummer of Cumberland, Julie Cloutier and her husband, Mike, of Scarborough and Jen Dadiotes and her husband, Demos, of Scarborough; his grandchildren, Christian and Nicholas Plummer of Cumberland and Jessica Doughty of Scarborough; two stepgrandsons, Nick and Jeffrey Cloutier of Presque Isle; his cousins, Robert and Rachel Plummer of Fort Fairfield, Donna Cyr Pelletier of Caribou, Roger and Nancy Durepo of Florida, George and Luann Archer of Massachusetts, Darryl Dolley of Florida and Ann Stewart of North Windham; a very dear friend, Anna Gallant; many other cousins, nieces and nephews. Visiting hours will be 2-6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22, at Hobbs Funeral Home, Cottage Road, South Portland. A service celebrating “Coach Plummer’s” life will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 23, in the Plummer Gymnasium at Scarborough High School.
