PRESQUE ISLE – Stephen E. Day Sr., 64, passed away peacefully Nov. 19, 2008, at a Brewer health care facility, with his devoted daughter and family members at his side, after a long and courageous battle with diabetes. He was born Dec. 1, 1943, in Presque Isle, the son of James R. Sr. and Mary (Tilley) Day. He was a graduate of Presque Isle High School and worked for the railroad heater service and Potato Service for many years. From 1982 to 1997 he drove for Star City Taxi, until continuing health forced him to retire permanently. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed collecting guns, hunting, fishing, NASCAR and truck pulls. He also greatly enjoyed reading, gardening and was a familiar sight on the local four-wheeler trail in Presque Isle in his power wheelchair. He was a devoted and loving father, grandfather and brother. He will be sadly missed by his daughter, Carol West and her husband, Darren, and his beloved grandchildren, Lauren, Kristen and Ryan, all of Easton; his son, Stephen E. Day Jr. and his fiancee, Sue Trombley of Pittsfield, N.H., and his beloved grandchildren, Crystal and Brandon. He is also survived by three sisters and their husbands, Mrs. Bertha and Guy Weaver, Mrs. Viola and Malcolm Weaver, all of Presque Isle, and Mrs. Edna and Skip Murray of Bangor; three brothers and their wives, Tom and Ruth Day of Fayetteville, N.C., Ralph and Shirley Day of Chester, and Dale and Debbie Day of Presque Isle. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Lila Day of Presque Isle and Mrs. Judy Day of Easton. He will be fondly remembered by two special cousins, Shirley and Claudine Day of Mars Hill; several other nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by two brothers, Preston, in 1998 and Jim Jr., in 2006. Mr. Day’s children thank Dr. Daniel Fowler and the staff at Horizons Fort Fairfield Health Center; Dr. Henry Atkins, Judy Varnum and the staff at Brewer Rehab and Living Center, as well as the staff at County Dialysis, Presque Isle; and Union Street Dialysis, Bangor, for the outstanding quality and compassionate care he received. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at Grant Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. David Williams officiating. Relatives and friends may call 10 a.m. until the time of service.
