SIDNEY – Shirley Lucille Burgess, 79, a resident of Sidney for 30 years, passed away Saturday, Nov. 22, 2008, at her home. She was born Sept. 12, 1929, in Springfield, the daughter of Francis R. and Alice (Worster) Harvey. Shirley attended South Portland High School before working as a licensed practical nurse at Hillside Nursing Home, South Portland She married Richard E. Burgess, Oct. 28, 1950, and after her employment with Hillside Nursing Home, she continued in the field working as a private duty nurse in the Kennebec Valley area. Shirley was a caregiver, not only in her profession, but with her own family as well. Most important to her was the love she shared for her family and being available to them whenever they needed her. Whether she was helping out, spending time with, or cooking for her family, they meant everything to her. She will be dearly missed by her friends and family, especially her husband, Dick. Shirley was predeceased by one son, Paul L. Burgess, Aug. 31; her sisters, Frances Wakefield, Marjorie Crocker, Pauline Campbell and Juanita Foss; and her brothers, Eben, Harlan, Richard and Dale Harvey. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Richard; one son, Delmont Burgess of Sidney; one brother, Delmont Harvey and his wife, Sandra, of Lakeville; four grandchildren, Alice and Dawn Burgess, both of Waterville, Christy Mills of Hollis and Paul F. Burgess of Biddeford; four great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. The family thanks Shirley’s nieces, Barbara Severance of Palermo and Beverly Rogers of Southboro, Mass., for the wonderful, loving care they extended to Shirley throughout her illness. Relatives and friends are invited to visit 11 a.m.-noon Monday, Dec. 1, at Knowlton & Hewins Funeral Home, One Church St., Augusta, where a celebration of Shirley’s life will be held noon.
