NAPLES, Fla. – Kenneth E. Fernald, 82, passed away peacefully Sunday, Nov. 30, 2008, surrounded by his devoted family and under the care of Avow Hospice, Naples, Fla. Ken was a thoughtful husband, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, as well as a friend to so many. He was born and raised in Maine. After graduating high school, Ken elected to join the service. He served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Muliphen, during World War II. After the war, he attended college in Worcester, Mass. His career as a plant manager for a variety of companies took his family from Massachusetts to Kentucky and Wisconsin, finally ending up in Canada, to open and operate a family-run summer resort. Ken and his wife enjoyed his retirement as residents of Naples, Fla., and Grand Bend, Ontario, Canada, since 1980. Ken enjoyed most being with his family and friends, regardless of the activity. He is survived by his loving wife of 46 years, Donna Fernald; his children, Ken Fernald of Florida, Pam Mewha of Florida, Brad Fernald and Lynn of Georgia, Kena Yoke of Florida, Shawn Limpert and Kurt of Alabama and Kirk Fernald and Laura of Florida; stepson, James Brown and Denise of Ontario, Canda; his brother, Laurence Fernald of Maine; and brother-in-law, Duane Brown of Ontario, Canada. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Andrea, Carrie, Kelly, Tyson, Kristie, Lisa, Christopher, Kevin and Lake; also several great-grandchildren. His family also includes numerous nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews, many of which he was able to spend time with recently in Maine. He was predeceased by his parents, Percy and Evelyn Fernald; his sister and her husband, Carolyn and Charles Clark; and his sister-in-law, Mary Fernald, all of Maine. The family extends their deepest appreciation for the care of so many people at Naples Community Hospital and Avow Hospice. Their care and concern gave comfort for the family in this difficult transition. A memorial service celebrating his life and recognizing his military service will begin 3 p.m. promptly Thursday, Dec. 4, at Fuller Funeral Home, Naples, Fla.
