ELLSWORTH – Mildred Elizabeth (Cottle) Bates, wife of the late Charles S. Bates of Ellsworth, passed away Dec. 16, 2008, at a Bangor health care facility. She was born May 24, 1920, in Hamilton, Ohio, the daughter of W. Bartlett Cottle and Elizabeth Temple (Cushman) Cottle, moving to Ellsworth in 1926. She attended Ellsworth schools and graduated from Ellsworth High School, Class of 1938. She was a member of United Baptist Church, Ellsworth and United Bible Class. She was a 50-year member of the Irene Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star No. 97, Ellsworth. She was a secretary in the Ellsworth School Department for many years and clerk-typist in several state of Maine offices and businesses in Ellsworth and Bangor. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 49 years, Charles. She was also predeceased by her special cousin, Alice Cushman Woodbury of Belfast. She is survived by her special cousin, Emily Hinds of Portland and her family; and the family of Alice Woodbury: Roger Woodbury of Trenton and Jean Isteero of Baltimore. She is also survived by special nieces and nephew by marriage, Patricia Riley, Constance Fox and Michael Riley, all of Ellsworth. Friends may call 2-4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, where a brief funeral service will be held 4 p.m. Spring graveside service will be held in late May at Woodbine Cemetery, Ellsworth.
