SORRENTO and BANGOR Chick Carlisle of Sorrento passed away peacefully Jan. 15, 2009, in Ellsworth, surrounded by his five children and his daughter-in-law, Jonni-Anne Carlisle. Chick had been receiving treatment for kidney failure for the past three years. Chick was born in 1927 in Bangor, the youngest of eight children of George T. and Maud D. Carlisle. He attended Bangor schools and graduated from the University of Maine, Orono, with a degree in economics in 1950 following a term in the U.S. Navy. Chick spent most of his career in banking in the Bangor area, serving as the vice president of Eastern Trust and Banking Co., and worked with Fleet and People’s Heritage Bank during the bank consolidation years until his retirement. He was active in the Bangor community, serving as a trustee of St. Joseph Hospital, Husson College and was on the board of directors of the University of Maine Foundation. Chick and his family summered at Kro-Krest, Sorrento, and was well known to the residents of this coastal community. He was active in Sorrento Village Improvement Association, served on the board of trustees for Long Pond Water District and was beloved by all as the grand marshall of the fourth of July celebrations at Campbell Zoo. During his retirement, Chick lobstered in Back Cove and spent many hours on the water, sharing his love of the ocean with his children and grandchildren. Chick was predeceased by his wife, Pat (Pozzy) in 2005. As children they were next door neighbors on Montgomery Street, Bangor. They were married in 1951 and for 53 wonderful years were true partners through life’s journey. He was known for his even disposition and humor, never raising his voice and always seeing some humor in everyday activities. He was a great storyteller and his antics and adventures with his lifelong friends will not soon be forgotten. Chick is survived by his brother, George D. of Orono; sister, Margaret C. Speirs of Bangor; his five children, Chris and his wife, Mary, of Hope, Ark., Jobie and his wife, Mary, of Logan, Utah, Colin and his wife, Jonni-Anne, of Brewer, Leslie Knowlton and her husband, Rick, of Camden and Susan and her partner, Alan Vigue, of Freeport. Chick was a grandfather to Joey and Keith McLaughlin, Tiffany, Tyler, Sarah, Will and Davis Carlisle, Kyle, Abby and Jay Knowlton; and one great-granddaughter, Gabrielle McLaughlin. He was predeceased by his brothers, Norman, John and Robert; sisters, Ruth and Mary; and by one grandson, Adam Carlisle. The family expresses their sincere thanks to Chick’s caregivers, daughter-in-law Jonni-Anne, Beverly Billings, Mary Bolshaw and Debbie Briggs, whose efforts and care through the recent years were priceless. Relatives and friends are welcome to call 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 20, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. A private burial is planned in Sorrento.
