MILBRIDGE – James H. Freeman, 75, passed away Jan. 26, 2009, at a Milbridge health care facility, after a long illness. He was born March 16, 1933, in Milbridge, son of Wilbur R. and Vera (Chipman) Freeman. James served for two years in the U.S. Army, starting in 1953, where he was stationed at Governors Island as an honor guard and military policeman. James got married in 1953 to his wife, Mary “Peggy” (Burgess) Freeman, and had two sons. He worked for many years as manager of Sunoco Garage, Milbridge, until 1974. He then became self-employed and worked in the fish weir business, owned a shingle mill, as well as cutting and hauling wood, and in his later years was crew leader of a blueberry lease for Wyman’s. James loved to fish and go snowmobiling with special friends, Pep and Doreen Strout, as well as taking long rides on Sundays. James was a lifetime member of Pleades Lodge No. 173 AF & AM of Milbridge. In addition to his wife of 55 years, “Peggy,” he is survived by his two sons, Anthony James and wife, Clara, and Nathan “Billy” and wife, Reneen, all of Milbridge; three grandchildren, Vera (Freeman) Small and her husband, Joseph, of Harrington, James Freeman and his wife, Lindsey, of Maryland, and Cherish (Freeman) Hanscom and her husband, Phillip, of Milbridge; four great-grandchildren, Micheala and Joseph Small, and Gabriel and Hayden Hanscom; and four sisters, Wilma Sargent of Ellsworth, Vera Helen Robertson of Florida, Hortense Hutchins and Joanne Smith and husband, Jim, of Milbridge. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A service of remembrance will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 30, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Main Street, Milbridge, where friends may call 1 p.m. until the time of service. Spring interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Milbridge.
